Episode 2, Internet Control or Privacy?

What’s more important on the Internet – privacy or control? I have a very quick discussion about it today with my opinion. Hint: it starts with a C.

Link to the Matrix analogy and This Week in Tech, episode 254, “Digg 4 was my idea”.

I mustn’t be getting you updates ‘cos I missed this one.

Oddly enough we were, that is I was explaining, about this yesterday.
As you know I recently left Facebook, to be fair the security concerns were more of an impetuous than the main reason. The main reason is touched on in you cast, that of control. I realised long ago that anything that appears on the web will be there for ever. True it may not be publicly accessible or rather easily accessible but it will be there. The web is more than a connections analogy it is also a sticky catch the flies analogy. For example years ago it was realised we need to keep a record of important sites that change and perhaps disappear, so the Wayback Machine was started. They were the first but they aren't the only one.
Anyway all this make me more than a little concerned about what is thrown at the web because unlike the fan this stuff sticks.
I don't say there is a solution, but you are quite right at the very least we need awareness of the realities and implications of data retention.
